Iris

The word « iris » from latin iris, iridis, itself from greek iris, iridos, sharing the signification of rainbow, iris of the eye, iris plant. Iris is also the name of the messenger of the Olympian gods, represented by the rainbow. She carries good news to Hera and is her favorite. The iris flower has kept part of this signification in its symbolic. When offered, it has a meaning of love or good news depending on color. It is a noble flower, inspiring the heraldic fleur-de-lys. Some of its species are used for perfumes, Catherine de’ Medici sprinkled it on her gloves already during the Renaissance.
