La course à l’espace, compétition féroce qui opposa États-Unis et Union Soviétique, fut l’odyssée du XXème siècle. Elle débuta en 1957 avec la mise en orbite, le 4 octobre, du satellite soviétique Spoutnik 1, suivie un mois plus tard par la mise en orbite du premier animal. Les missions et projets russes et américains se succèdent. Dans cette lutte, la NASA (National Aeronotics and Space Administration) joue un rôle prépondérant. Cette agence gouvernementale américaine fut créée le 29 juillet 1958 pour gérer l’astronautique civile. Trois programmes majeurs permirent aux États-Unis d’envoyer le premier homme sur la Lune : Mercury (1958-1963) envoya le premier américain dans l’espace.
